What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage measures the proportion of your total weight that comes from fat tissue, as opposed to lean mass (muscle, bones, organs, water). Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, body fat percentage provides a more accurate picture of your body composition. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body fat percentages — an athlete might have a BMI of 27 (overweight) with only 10% body fat, while a sedentary person at the same BMI could have 30% body fat.

How to Take Measurements

The U.S. Navy method requires three (men) or four (women) circumference measurements using a flexible tape measure:

  • Neck: Measure just below the Adam's apple (laryngeal prominence), at the smallest point. Keep the tape horizontal and don't compress the skin.
  • Waist (men): Measure at the level of the navel (belly button). For women: measure at the narrowest point, typically halfway between ribs and hip bone.
  • Hip (women only): Measure at the widest point of the hips/glutes.
  • Height: Stand straight against a wall, measure without shoes.

Methods of Measuring Body Fat

  • DEXA Scan (Gold Standard): X-ray scan, ~$100. Most accurate (±1-2%). Measures fat, muscle, and bone separately.
  • Hydrostatic Weighing: Underwater weighing, ±2%. Hard to find.
  • Skinfold Calipers: 7-site method, ±3-4% with experienced technician. Cheap.
  • Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA): Home scales, ±4-6%. Convenient but less accurate.
  • U.S. Navy Method: ±2-4% with accurate measurements. Free. Best DIY option.
  • BMI-Based Estimate: ±5%+. Least accurate, but requires no measurements beyond height/weight.

Body Fat Percentage for Men vs Women

Women naturally carry 6-11% more body fat than men at the same fitness level due to hormonal differences. Essential fat is 2-5% for men but 10-13% for women. A man at 15% body fat looks athletic; a woman at 15% would be extremely lean. Always use gender-specific formulas.

BMI vs Body Fat Percentage

BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular athlete with 10% body fat may have a BMI of 27 (overweight), while a sedentary person with 32% body fat could have a BMI of 22 (normal). Body fat percentage tells the real story.

How Body Fat Affects Health

Excess body fat (especially visceral fat around organs) increases risk of: type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Too little fat also carries risks: hormone disruption, weakened immunity, bone loss. Waist circumference is a strong independent health predictor: under 40 in (men) or 35 in (women).

How to Improve Body Composition

  1. Strength training — 2-4 sessions per week builds muscle and increases BMR.
  2. High protein — 1.6-2.2 g/kg preserves muscle during weight loss.
  3. Moderate deficit — 300-500 cal below TDEE. Larger deficits burn muscle.
  4. Sleep 7-9 hours — Poor sleep increases cortisol and visceral fat storage.
  5. Walk 8,000-10,000 steps/day — NEAT makes a significant difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Healthy ranges: Men 10-20%, Women 20-30%. Athletes are lower, and essential fat (minimum for health) is 2-5% (men) and 10-13% (women). Body fat below essential levels can impair hormone function, bone density, and immune health.

How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?

About ±2-4% of DEXA scans for most people. Accuracy depends on measurement precision — take 3 measurements and average them. Less accurate for extremely lean or obese individuals.

How can I lower my body fat?

A moderate calorie deficit (300-500 cal below TDEE), adequate protein (1.6-2.2 g/kg), strength training 3-4x/week, and 7-9 hours of sleep. Crash diets cause muscle loss and metabolic slowdown.
